Upon its resumption on April 23, 2024, the House of Representatives plans to address the recent surge in electricity tariffs imposed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu made this announcement, acknowledging the widespread criticism from opposition parties, prominent figures, and civil society organizations regarding the significant price hikes, with Band A consumers facing up to a 300 percent increase.

During a virtual appearance on “Ben Kalu’s Mandate,” a call-in radio program of FLO FM in Umuahia, Abia State, Kalu assured the public that the parliament would prioritize finding a resolution to this pressing issue.

He emphasized the parliament’s commitment to acting in the best interest of Nigerians and mentioned an ongoing concern regarding power supply to the University of Ibadan Teaching Hospital, which faced disconnection due to the tariff hike.

Kalu stressed the importance of striking a balance between addressing consumer hardships and maintaining investor interests, highlighting the need for a win-win solution.

He affirmed that the House of Representatives would thoroughly examine the matter upon resumption and work toward a satisfactory outcome.

Additionally, Kalu discussed the possibility of a new constitution for Nigeria, emphasizing the need for public participation in the constitutional amendment process.

He encouraged citizens to engage in public hearings and discussions organized by the National Assembly, indicating that the parliament would consider the desires and concerns of the people in shaping any constitutional changes.
