The Federal Capital Territory High Court has granted the request of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, to travel out of Abuja. Emefiele had requested a variation of the terms in his bail conditions.
He was granted bail on November 22, 2023, with a sum of N300 million and two sureties in like sum, both of whom must have landed property in the Maitama District of the FCT.
As part of the bail conditions, Emefiele was restricted from leaving the court’s jurisdiction and was required to deposit all his travel documents with the court.
During the recent proceedings, Emefiele’s lawyer, Mathew Bukka, assured the court that his client would not jump bail if the travel restriction was lifted.

Bukka also noted that Emefiele’s traveling documents were already in the court’s possession.
The counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Rotimi Oyedepo, did not object to the request but suggested that Emefiele should provide an undertaking to remain in Nigeria for the duration of his trial.
The judge granted Emefiele’s application but emphasized that he must remain in the country throughout the trial.
