The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) announced on Wednesday that Trabzonspor will face repercussions for the violent incidents that marred their recent league match against Fenerbahce. Following the chaotic scenes, Trabzonspor has been ordered to play six home matches without spectators.

Additionally, two Fenerbahce players, Jayden Oosterwolde and Irfan Can Egribayat, received fines and one-match bans from the TFF disciplinary board. Oosterwolde’s punishment stems from an altercation with a Trabzonspor fan who had entered the pitch wearing a mask.

The disturbances erupted after Fenerbahce’s 3-2 victory on March 17, with Trabzonspor fans storming the field during the post-match celebrations, resulting in an assault on Fenerbahce goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic.

Trabzonspor is also facing financial penalties totaling 3.1 million Turkish lira ($97,000) as a consequence of the incident.

Nigerian international Bright Osayi-Samuel, despite being involved in an altercation with a fan, was not penalized by the disciplinary board, which deemed his actions did not breach regulations.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino condemned the violence, labeling it “totally unacceptable.”

This episode adds to a series of violent incidents in Turkish football, including a suspension of the championship in December following an attack on a referee during a match between Ankaragucu and Rizespor.

Matches between Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor have been particularly contentious, with previous instances of violence including attacks on referees and players, as well as bus ambushes.

Trabzonspor, a former Turkish titleholder, has a history of controversial incidents, including a 2015 episode where the club president locked referees inside the stadium overnight in protest.
