Intense rainfall in Thailand’s deep south has led to widespread flooding, impacting tens of thousands of people and prompting the closure of several roads and railway lines, officials reported on Monday.

In the provinces of Yala and Narathiwat, at least a dozen schools have been shut down due to the flooding.

Disturbing images from the affected region depict homes and shops submerged in murky brown waters, forcing residents to seek refuge on higher floors.

The adverse weather conditions have also affected maritime activities, resulting in the sinking of at least seven boats in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea since Friday.

The state railway company in Thailand noted that track subsidence has compelled trains heading south to the Malaysian border to stop at Yala, approximately 100 km away.

Authorities have issued warnings to residents in the affected provinces, advising them to be prepared for potential evacuations if the flood situation worsens.
