Tragedy struck during an almsgiving event at Shafa Holdings Company Plc on Jos Road in Bauchi State on Sunday, resulting in a stampede that claimed the lives of at least seven individuals.
The incident occurred around 10 a.m. during the company’s annual Zakat exercise, aimed at assisting the less privileged in the state, at the company’s headquarters along Jos Road.
According to the Bauchi State Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakili, the situation has been stabilized.
He stated, “The command received a distress call around 10:20 a.m. from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital Bauchi, reporting that five people were brought unconscious due to the stampede.”

Wakili further explained, “Upon receiving the call, the Commissioner of Police, Musa Mohammed, directed the area commander to the scene of the crime. We have cordoned off the place and evacuated those injured to the hospital.”
Unfortunately, four of the injured individuals were pronounced dead by medical professionals.
Providing an update on Monday, Wakili revealed that three additional women lost their lives, bringing the total death toll to seven.
Two women passed away at the Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, while the third woman died at home.
The deceased individuals include Aisha Usman (13), Sahura Abubakar (55), Aisha Ibrahim Abubakar (43), Khadija Isah (8), Maryam Suleiman (20), Maryam Shuibu (16), and Hassana Saidu (53). They hailed from various neighborhoods in Bauchi.
