Online streaming platform Spotify has designated Nigerian rapper, singer, and songwriter Olamide Adedeji, popularly known as “Olamide,” as the “most influential street pop artiste of his generation.”
Spotify’s Editor, West Africa, Benewaah Boateng, in a statement on Thursday announced the rise of the sub-genre “Street Pop” in Nigeria has been remarkable, with Olamide playing a pivotal role in elevating it to mainstream recognition.
Boateng highlighted Olamide’s consistent influence since his debut hit single, “Eni Duro,” noting his cultural impact in popularizing dance styles like “Shakiti Bobo” and introducing street lingos such as “Baddo Sneh” and “Pepper Dem.”
Through his record label YBNL, Olamide has also been instrumental in discovering and nurturing emerging street pop talents.

Street pop, originating from a fusion of Afrobeats, Highlife, Hip-hop, Fuji, Apala, indigenous sounds, and contemporary elements, is characterized by engaging rhythms, fast-paced beats, and lyrics reflecting the everyday challenges of Nigerians on the streets.
Boateng acknowledged Olamide’s position as the ninth most-streamed artist in Nigeria, highlighting his recent project, “Unruly,” which received widespread acclaim.
The track “Gaza” was particularly praised for its appeal and musical craftsmanship.
The statement also recognized Seyi Vibez, an emerging force in the Nigerian street pop scene, with notable success in 2023, including a sold-out concert at the O2 Indigo Hall in the UK and features on hit songs like “Gwagwalada,” the second most-streamed song in Nigeria on Spotify.
Zinoleesky was commended for reshaping and contributing significantly to the street pop genre with skillful melodies and compelling storytelling, earning him a spot among the top 15 most-streamed artists in Nigeria.
Boateng expressed optimism about the continued growth of street pop, suggesting that the genre is poised for exponential growth and may emerge as the next global phenomenon, similar to Afrobeats.
