The Kaduna State governor, Uba Sani on Wednesday expressed deep concern over the decline in school enrollment in the state, attributing it to the prevailing insecurity caused by activities such as kidnapping, banditry, and related crimes.
He highlighted incidents such as the abduction of 135 students from LEA Primary and Junior Secondary School in Kuriga, Chikun Local Government, as illustrative of the negative impact of insecurity on education.
According to him, his government’s initiative is to relocate 359 schools from areas infested with terrorists and merge them with schools in safer locations.
This move aims to ensure uninterrupted education for children in conflict-prone areas.
Governor Sani emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting the alarming drop in school enrollment rates, with over 200,000 fewer primary school pupils recorded in the 2022/2023 academic session compared to the previous year.
He attributed this decline primarily to insecurity, particularly in areas like Chikun, Birnin Gwari, Kajuru, Giwa, and Igabi.
In response to the security challenges facing educational institutions, Governor Sani commended the establishment of the Schools Protection Squad by the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun.
