The Republic of Rwanda has issued a stern warning against the resurgence of hatred and disunity to prevent a recurrence of the devastating genocide it experienced 30 years ago.

Speaking at the 30th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Abuja, the Rwandan High Commissioner to Nigeria, Christophe Bazivamo, emphasized the importance of unity and remembrance under the theme “Remember – Unite – Renew”.

The genocide, orchestrated by Hutu extremists against the Tutsi minority, claimed over a million lives in just 100 days, leaving a profound legacy of trauma and loss.

Despite Rwanda’s remarkable recovery under President Paul Kagame, the scars of the genocide continue to resonate.

On April 7, the anniversary of the genocide’s start, President Kagame will light a remembrance flame at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where more than 250,000 victims are laid to rest.

The United Nations and the African Union will also hold commemorative events to honor the victims.

Reflecting on the lessons of history, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres underscored the urgent need to combat hate and division, proclaiming, “never again”.

High Commissioner Bazivamo echoed this sentiment, stressing the need to confront intolerance, discrimination, and hate ideologies that still persist beyond Rwanda’s borders.

Bazivamo urged concerted efforts to educate future generations about the horrors of genocide, advocating for curriculum integration and the establishment of memorials to instill a commitment to peace and unity.

In response, Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, conveyed Nigeria’s condolences to genocide survivors, emphasizing the imperative of preventing such atrocities from recurring.

As the world unites to remember the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, the call to stand against hatred and discrimination remains resolute, reaffirming the commitment to a future where peace triumphs over hate.
