Rivers State elders and leaders have penned an open letter to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, cautioning him against executing the resolutions agreed upon during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja aimed at resolving the political crisis in the state.
In their communication, the Rivers elders characterized the resolution as a “death sentence,” arguing that it was biased in favor of Fubara’s estranged political mentor and former governor, Nyesom Wike.
The forum, led by former Rivers State governor Chief Rufus Ada-George, expressed this view in two distinct open letters dated December 24, 2023, addressed to President Tinubu and Governor Fubara respectively.

The letters were presented to the press in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
They asserted that the presidential resolution was both skewed and impractical, contending that it went against the principles of the rule of law.
The elders, acting as custodians of the Rivers people’s conscience and morality, conveyed their disapproval of the directive, emphasizing its partiality towards Nyesom Wike at the expense of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the broader interests of the people of Rivers State.
They argued that Tinubu lacked the authority to overturn the decision of a court of competent jurisdiction, while also criticizing Fubara’s Christmas Day broadcast, in which he pledged to implement the resolution.
The open letters were collectively signed by several prominent figures, including Chief George, Dr. Gabriel Toby, Ibim Princewill, Rear Adm. P. Fingesi (retd.), Emeritus Prof. Dagogo Fubara, and others.
Despite their criticisms, the elders commended Fubara for his humility as demonstrated in his Christmas Day address to the people of the state.
