Former Coordinators of the Grassroots Development Initiative, a political arm of the Peoples Democratic Party in 12 local government areas of Rivers State, have announced their support for the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

These coordinators, representing Obio/Akpor, Ogu/Bolo, Port Harcourt City, Opobo/Nkoro, Gokana, Bonny, Ahoada West, Ahoada East, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Oyigbo, Asari-Toru, and Akuku-Toru Local Government Areas, made their pledge during a solidarity visit to Governor Fubara at the Government House, Port Harcourt, on Sunday.

Led by Collins Onunwo, the former Coordinator in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, the delegation explained their decision to resign from their positions in GDI to join the Simplified Movement, emphasizing that it was in the interest of the Rivers people.

Onunwo highlighted that their allegiance to Governor Fubara stemmed from their belief in supporting the success of the present administration’s policies and programs.

Addressing the media, Onunwo stressed that GDI’s primary mission was to safeguard the interests of Rivers State and its people.

He emphasized their commitment to Governor Fubara’s leadership, citing their past support during elections and their dedication to protecting the mandate given by the people.

Furthermore, Onunwo clarified that their departure from GDI was driven by their desire to align with the interests of the Rivers people. He urged the public to recognize GDI’s historical significance but affirmed their shift towards prioritizing the state’s welfare.

Echoing similar sentiments, former Public Relations Officer of GDI, Christian Abu, emphasized that the ex-GDI coordinators resigned to join the Simplified Movement, underscoring GDI’s role in previous electoral successes in the state.

The meeting also saw the presence of notable figures such as Amb Chijioke Ihunwo, the State Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, and Solomon Abel Eke, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Power.

Governor Fubara, who was Wike’s chosen successor, emphasized his administration’s focus on fulfilling its mandate and serving the people’s needs, despite the tensions with his predecessor and some members of the state House of Assembly.

He reiterated his commitment to governing responsibly and encouraged active participation from the people in governance.
