A construction worker who was rescued by the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) following a building collapse in Abuja is dead, according to FEMA’s Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa.

The incident occurred at a construction site situated in the Central Business District, beside Taj Bank, around 3:30 pm on Saturday.

The victim, one of the laborers involved in casting the first floor of the building, became trapped when the entire cast reportedly collapsed on him.

FEMA, in an earlier statement, revealed that the rescue operation involved personnel from FEMA and the FCT Fire Service.

The team successfully extricated the trapped man with the use of extrication equipment and the construction company’s excavator.

The victim was promptly rushed to the Trauma Centre of the National Hospital, Abuja, for medical attention.

Despite the immediate response and efforts to save his life, the construction worker, whose identity has not been disclosed, succumbed to his injuries.

FEMA’s Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, confirmed the unfortunate development in a Whatsapp message, stating, “Yes, he died today.

FEMA’s Acting Director General, Mohammed Sabo, who was present at the scene during the rescue operation, expressed his condolences and appealed to developers to strictly adhere to building codes.

The incident raises concerns about the safety protocols at construction sites and the need for enhanced measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

As the community mourns the loss of the construction worker, attention is likely to shift towards investigating the circumstances that led to the building collapse and whether any lapses in safety procedures contributed to the tragic outcome.
