Human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju, has put forth reasons for recommending that former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, resign from politics in the aftermath of the 2023 presidential election.
Adeyanju, in his New Year message, asserted that Atiku’s loss in the election was due to a combination of factors, including arrogance, inadequate human relationships, and an inability to manage the opposition effectively.
According to Adeyanju, if Atiku had managed the 2023 polls better, the results might have been different, leading to the election of a different president for Nigeria.
He criticized Atiku for not collaborating with key figures such as Labour Party’s Peter Obi, New Nigeria People’s Party’s Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, which, he believes, contributed to President Bola Tinubu’s victory.

Adeyanju suggested that Atiku should recognize his contributions and refrain from contemplating a run for the 2027 presidency.
Instead, he encouraged Atiku to assume the role of a mentor to younger politicians.
The activist highlighted the pivotal role Atiku played in Nigerian politics over three decades, acknowledging his contributions to shaping the nation’s democracy.
Adeyanju concluded by urging Atiku to step aside and allow a younger generation of politicians to take the lead.
In response to Atiku’s defeat, Adeyanju called for unity within the opposition, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to present a formidable front in the 2027 elections.
The 2023 presidential election saw Bola Tinubu of the All Progressive Congress declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission, securing 8,794,726 votes.
Atiku Abubakar came in second with 6,984,520 votes, while Peter Obi secured 6,101,533 votes to finish in third place.
