Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has urged the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders to take decisive action to eliminate all forms of modern-day slavery.
In a statement posted on his social media handle to mark the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, the former Anambra State Governor emphasized the need to address issues such as child labour, sexual exploitation, and human trafficking.
Obi expressed concern about the high incidence of modern-day slavery in Nigeria, both within its borders and involving its citizens subjected to slavery abroad.
He highlighted the recent surge in insecurity and poverty as contributing factors to an increase in reported cases of slavery, child labour, and sexual exploitation in the country.

Referring to reports from organizations such as the Walk Free Organisation’s Global Slavery Index and Innovations for Poverty Action, Obi underscored the urgency for the government and stakeholders to take concerted efforts to eradicate slavery.
He cited statistics indicating that Nigeria had a high prevalence of modern slavery, with an estimated 1.6 million individuals living in slavery in 2021.
Obi stressed that abolishing slavery is crucial for restoring the dignity of citizens facing distress and ensuring a Nigeria “bound in freedom.”
He concluded by emphasizing that the eradication of slavery is essential for building a new Nigeria characterized by the dignity of all its citizens.
