Sokoto State’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has leveled accusations against Governor Ahmed Aliyu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), alleging his administration’s irresponsible handling of public funds.

In response, the state government dismissed the PDP’s claims as shameless propaganda.

In a press release issued on Saturday, PDP’s Publicity Secretary, Hassan Sayinnawal, accused the APC-led government of engaging in reckless spending through the awarding of grossly inflated contracts, bypassing due process and standard financial procedures.

The party expressed concern over the unilateral approval of substantial contracts by Governor Ahmed Aliyu without the involvement of the Executive Council or statutory ministries and departments.

The statement highlighted examples of what the PDP considered extravagant spending, such as the alleged N2 billion cost for illuminating a few streets in Sokoto metropolis, the unprecedented N40 billion allocation for constructing urban streets in two neighborhoods with roads less than two kilometers long, and the purported allocation of N292 million for redecorating three roundabouts already handled by private companies.

The PDP criticized the allocation of N1 billion for purchasing a new fleet of limousines for Governor Ahmed Aliyu and called on him to reconsider the purportedly wasteful expenditure of N800 million on the reconstruction of the Maiduguri Road by Eastern Bypass Road, a project of less than two kilometers without any clearing or compensations involved.

In response, the state government, through Commissioner for Information Sambo Danchadi, labeled the PDP’s statement as shameless propaganda.

Danchadi defended the administration’s spending, emphasizing the positive impact on Sokoto’s socio-economic landscape.

He argued that the quality of work and the number of road projects executed by the APC-led administration within its first 100 days surpassed those of the previous eight years under the Tambuwal administration.

Danchadi attributed the costs to the use of imported materials and highlighted the administration’s success in rehabilitating roads and enhancing infrastructure in Sokoto township.
