Former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has commended the Nigerian Senate for its intervention in safeguarding the autonomy of local governments across the country.

Ortom’s statement follows the Senate’s resolution, prompted by Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, calling for the withholding of statutory allocations to non-democratically elected local government councils.

Ortom praised the Senate’s decision as a significant move that reflects a commitment to democratic principles and local government autonomy.

He sees the resolution as a proactive measure to deter actions that undermine citizens’ democratic rights and principles of good governance.

The former governor particularly commended Senator Abba Moro for his motion, which brought attention to the issue of unconstitutionally sacked local government councils in Benue State.

The Senate’s unanimous resolution is viewed as a crucial step in upholding democracy at the grassroots level and preventing dictatorial tendencies.
