Following his failure to convert a penalty in Genk’s recent loss to Club Brugge in the Belgium Pro League, Tolu Arokodare, Genk’s Nigerian forward, became a target of online racism.

The match, held at the Cegeka Arena, saw Genk hosting Brugge, with both teams vying for a higher position in the league standings. In the 18th minute, Arokodare, who had scored eight goals in 10 starts for Genk this season, had the chance to give his team the lead from the penalty spot.

However, his miss shifted the momentum in favor of Club Brugge, who secured a 3-0 victory with goals from Hugo Vetlesen in the 18th minute, and two more in the 73rd and 85th minutes.

Subsequently, Arokodare faced racial abuse on social media from certain individuals expressing their dissatisfaction.

Nigerian sports journalist Ojora Babatunde condemned the abuse, highlighting the unacceptable behavior of some Genk fans.

Arokodare joined Genk in the winter transfer window of 2023 as a replacement for another Nigerian striker, Paul Onuachu, who moved to Southampton.

Since then, Arokodare has scored 13 goals for Genk in 50 appearances.
