Poultry farmers in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, are expressing concern about the continuous increase in the cost of poultry feeds and the low patronage in the sale of birds during Christmas celebration.

According to reports from Saving Point Media, the farmers are facing challenges due to the high cost of birds, leading to decreased demand and customers turning away when they hear the prices.

Buyers are opting for meat instead, as they find the prices for poultry unjustifiable in comparison to the size of the birds.

The farmers attribute the high cost of birds to the ongoing rise in the price of feeds used in raising them.

Some buyers mentioned that even the larger birds in the market are priced at twelve to fifteen thousand naira, which they believe can buy a more substantial amount of meat.

Turkeys are reported to be sold for fifty to eighty thousand naira, higher than the prices seen in the previous year.

The farmers are urging producers and suppliers to consider reasonable interventions to address the challenges they are facing, with hopes of stabilizing prices and increasing patronage.

Similarly, poultry farmers in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja are also expressing concerns about the continuous increase in the cost of poultry feeds and low patronage in the sale of birds.

They emphasize the challenges associated with high feed costs, substantial capital investment in poultry farming, and increased demand for feeds during the Christmas season, leading to higher prices.

The farmers in both regions are calling for intervention and collaborative efforts to ease their plight and ensure the sustainability of poultry farming.
