The Ogun State Police Command has disclosed that they are actively pursuing the perpetrators responsible for the assassination of Bashorun of Akarigbo, Sagamu, Chief Abiodun Folarin, on Monday night.

SP Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed the incident to SavingPointMedia on Tuesday, classifying the case as a suspected murder or assassination, as the assailants did not take any belongings.

Two expended cartridges were discovered at the crime scene, and the deceased, a Muslim, was laid to rest on Monday following religious rites.

SavingPointMedia reported that the three assailants arrived at the Itunsokun residence in Sagamu at approximately 10:45 pm in a Toyota Camry.

They fired shots into the air to disperse onlookers, targeted the chief, shot him dead, and promptly fled the scene without pilfering any valuables.

Chief Abiodun Folarin, also known as the Baasegun of Itunsokun community, Sagamu, was buried on Tuesday following Islamic rites.

Assuring swift action, SP Odutola pledged that the culprits would soon be apprehended, as the police, led by the Sagamu Area Commander, have initiated an undercover investigation.

She reiterated that those responsible for the heinous crime will face justice.

The news of the chief’s killing has heightened tension in the town, with residents speculating that he may have been targeted by cultists, contributing to unrest in the community.

A resident suggested that the cultists might have sought to eliminate him due to his active role in the recent town-wide initiative against cultism.

Expressing sorrow and frustration, two unnamed traditional rulers underscored the importance of a thorough investigation by the authorities.

Additionally, an anonymous Sagamu Local Government staff disclosed that the tragic killing prompted the abrupt closure of the local government office to prevent potential violence.

The source emphasized the high tension in the town, with workers leaving the secretariat to avoid being caught in any crisis, although the details surrounding the incident are still unclear.
