The Government of Sierra Leone has recognized and awarded the last group of ten Nigerian volunteers who served diligently under the Technical Aid Corps program.

The volunteers, spanning various professions, were posted in December 2021 for a two-year non-renewable volunteer service.

Yusuf Yakub, the Director General of the Directorate of Technical Aid Corps, warmly received the volunteers on Wednesday, commending them as worthy ambassadors who brought pride to Nigeria through their exemplary service.

Yakub emphasized the importance of the volunteers’ role, stating, “In Sierra Leone, you were not there in your own capacity but you were there as Nigeria. Whatever you do in Sierra Leone, you are seen as Nigeria. So the people will judge Nigeria through what you have done.”

Expressing his gratitude, Yakub continued, “Thank God that you have been judged well to the extent of receiving an award as the best set of volunteers that have ever served in that country. I am proud to say that we are very proud of you, and I am sure that President Bola Tinubu, who has a ‘4 D’ foreign policy instruments, will be very proud of you as worthy, patriotic Nigerians that have been sent on assignment and have come back with a trophy.”

During the ceremony, Yakub presented certificates to the volunteers and stressed that Nigeria would continue to deploy volunteers as part of its soft power diplomacy, reaping numerous benefits for the country.

The awarded volunteers include Abdullahi Ulaira, Umar Baba, Jakada Bulus, Dachollom Chong, Izuka Nnaemeka, Adamu Omame, Bosindo Buluembelemere, Uchendu David, Madalla Aliyu, and Omorere Eunice.

Omorere Eunice, a nurse specializing in mental health, shared her positive experience, stating, “It has been a very pleasant experience. We arrived there, and we were well received. We were given a good reception and accommodated properly, and we, the volunteers, did our best. We gave our best to the country.”

She expressed gratitude to Mr. President, the DG TAC, and all resource persons who supported them during their stay in Sierra Leone.

The volunteers’ dedication and the recognition they received highlight the success of the Technical Aid Corps program and its positive impact on diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Sierra Leone.
