Youths and women in Niger State took to the streets on Monday to protest what they described as the severe hardship and escalating cost of living in the country.
The demonstration commenced when a group of women blocked the Minna-Bida Road at the well-known Kpakungu Roundabout to express their grievances over what they termed as the hardships endured under the administration of Bola Tinubu.
They were soon joined by men and youths who also blocked the road, bringing vehicular traffic to a halt.
The economic situation in the country had become increasingly dire following President Tinubu’s removal of fuel subsidies on May 29, 2023.
This policy decision led to a surge in food prices and transportation costs, significantly impacting the cost of living.

Additionally, the Central Bank of Nigeria’s decision in June 2023 to float the naira contributed to the depreciation of the national currency against the US dollar, exacerbating the economic challenges faced by Nigerians.
Despite attempts by the police to disperse the protesters, they remained resolute and continued their demonstration.
The Niger State Police command spokesman, Wasiu Abiodun, explained that the police had to use minimum force to restore order and reopen the road for traffic.
In the midst of these protests, the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, assured Nigerians that the hardships they were facing would soon come to an end with the implementation of appropriate government policies.
She emphasized the government’s commitment to achieving peace, progress, and prosperity for all citizens in the year 2024.
Commenting on the protests, various civil society organizations expressed their support for the demonstrators, highlighting the need for the government to address the root causes of the economic challenges facing Nigerians.
They called for peaceful protests and urged the government to listen to the voices of the people and take decisive action to alleviate their suffering.
