In a decisive move, Minister Nkiru Onyejiosha of the State’s Labour and Employment department issued a shutdown order on Friday against a Metal Manufacturing Company located in Sagamu Local Government.

The company, situated at Gbara near Sotubo and involved in battery production, had been repeatedly warned about the absence of protective gear for its workers, posing serious health hazards.

Expressing her concern, Minister Onyejiosha instructed her staff to enforce compliance with safety regulations at the company.

Upon visiting the site personally, Minister Onyejiosha was appalled by the conditions, describing them as worse than initially reported.

She emphasized the severity of the irresponsibility displayed by the factory’s management and declared the company prohibited until they adhere to the prescribed safety protocols outlined in the country’s laws.

Highlighting the dangerous working conditions, Onyejiosha revealed workers without appropriate protective gear, including missing boots and helmets, engaged in tasks involving harmful substances like lead.

She expressed disbelief at the level of negligence, noting that such practices would not be tolerated in the company’s home country.

Following the minister’s directive, Mrs. Lauretta Adogwu, Director of the Occupational Safety and Health Department at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, along with ministry staff, affixed a prohibition notice on the company’s premises.

Workers were subsequently urged to vacate the premises, marking a critical step in ensuring the safety and well-being of the affected employees.
