In the past five months, the Nigerian military has dismantled 636 illegal refining sites and seized 21.7 million litres of crude oil, amounting to a value of N54 billion.

The data, gathered from military press releases covering the period between August 3 and December 1, indicates an increased effort to combat oil theft, following President Bola Tinubu’s directive to end such activities and bolster the country’s revenues.

Over this period, 610 suspected oil thieves were apprehended, and 670 boats used in transporting stolen crude oil were impounded by the military, particularly targeting oil theft in the South-South region.

The intensified military operations yielded significant results, including arrests, recoveries, and destruction of illegal refining sites throughout the Niger Delta region.

Despite commendation for their efforts, security experts, Oladele Fajana urge sustained action, emphasizing the detrimental impact of oil theft on the nation’s economy.
