On Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Gabriel Attal, 34, as the new prime minister, making him the youngest person to hold France’s second-highest office.
Additionally, Attal becomes the country’s first openly gay prime minister.
Gabriel Attal, who joined Macron’s political movement in 2016, previously served as the government spokesperson from 2020 to 2022, gaining recognition among the French public.
Following this role, he was appointed as the budget minister before assuming the prestigious position of education minister in July.

The appointment comes as part of President Macron’s efforts to initiate a fresh start for the remainder of his term, which lasts until 2027.
Macron is constitutionally barred from seeking a third consecutive term as president.
Attal’s predecessor, Elisabeth Borne, resigned on Monday amid recent political turbulence surrounding an immigration law aimed at strengthening the government’s authority to deport foreigners.
In her resignation letter, Borne indicated that she stepped down at Macron’s request, citing the president’s desire to “appoint a new prime minister.”
