Workers under the umbrella of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in a protest stummed various offices of electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to oppose the Band A tariff hike.

The protests took place in Lagos, Oyo, Plateau, Adamawa, Imo and other states on Monday.

In Lagos, workers gathered at the corporate headquarters of the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, demanding the reversal of the Band A tariff.

Similar protests occurred in Oyo, where demonstrators picketed the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company office.

Police presence was noted at some locations to prevent potential unrest.

The NLC and TUC issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to reverse the tariff hike.

However, the Federal Government warned that reversing the tariff could negatively impact the power sector and urged Nigerians to endure the temporary challenges.

Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) advised the government to remove electricity subsidies to bolster the economy.

In Plateau State, NLC and TUC members blocked the entrance of the Jos Electricity Distribution Company headquarters and picketed NERC offices in Jos.

The State Chairman of the NLC, Eugene Mangji, affirmed their action aimed at pressuring authorities to reverse the tariff hike.

The ultimatum given to NERC demanded the immediate reversal of the tariff hike, cessation of discriminatory practices, and adherence to statutory regulations.

Failure to comply by May 12, 2024, would prompt further actions, including occupation of NERC and DisCos offices nationwide.
