The Kwara State Government has initiated a new round of food palliative distribution to residents across both rural and urban areas of the state.
According to a statement from the government house released by Rafiu Ajakaye on Tuesday, the distribution commenced with rice being disbursed through various channels including religious leaders, nongovernmental organizations, and community-based groups.
The statement emphasized that this food assistance aims to alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy removal and the rising cost of living on the populace.
Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Community Development, highlighted the government’s strategy of involving community-based organizations (CBOs) and religious leaders due to their proximity and understanding of the needs of the people.

Olohungbebe explained that 20,000 bags of 10kg rice are being distributed to urban areas in the first phase, with additional bags earmarked for densely populated local government areas through CBOs and NGOs.
He further elaborated on the selection process, stating that recognized and certified CBOs were prioritized for the distribution, alongside NGOs with a track record of working with vulnerable populations.
The state government had previously distributed 250,000 bags of 10kg rice last year to mitigate the effects of fuel subsidy removal.
The current distribution, starting in the state capital, will extend to other parts of the state in subsequent phases.
Representatives of community-based organizations expressed gratitude for the government’s efforts, acknowledging the relief the palliative would bring to their communities and alleviate pressure on the state government.
They praised Governor AbdulRazaq for his commitment to addressing the welfare needs of the people.
