Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, has offered a positive assessment of Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, describing them as “credible in many substantial aspects.”

Jega shared his views during a live appearance on Channels Television’s “Politics Tonight” on Monday.

Jega clarified that his assessment was not intended as a defense of the incumbent INEC chairman, Prof. Yakubu Mahmood.

While acknowledging challenges, Jega emphasized that blame should be appropriately apportioned, and politicians played a direct role in areas where there were “very serious challenges.”

He noted that such influences “more or less circumscribed the powers” of INEC and its chairman.

The 2023 general elections in Nigeria have generated mixed reactions, with debates surrounding their credibility, outcomes, legal battles, and decisions by election petitions tribunals and the Court of Appeal.

Jega’s perspective as a former INEC chairman carries weight, given his experience and role in overseeing the 2011 general elections, widely regarded as a significant improvement in Nigeria’s electoral process.
