Recent revelations shed light on the selection process that led to Finidi George clinching the coveted position of Super Eagles coach, beating out notable contenders like Emmanuel Amuneke and others.
The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), following recommendations from its Technical Committee, approved Finidi’s appointment, overlooking over 60 other applicants, including foreign and local coaches such as Michael Nsien, Henry Makinwa, Sylvanus Okpala, and Daniel Amokachi.
Sources within the NFF Technical Committee, speaking anonymously, disclosed attempts by certain stakeholders to influence the selection process in favor of their candidates.

However, the committee remained steadfast in its decision-making, prioritizing merit over external pressures.
Explaining the rationale behind Finidi’s selection, sources highlighted his extensive experience and familiarity with the Nigerian football landscape.
With the looming World Cup qualifiers against South Africa, the committee sought a coach who could seamlessly integrate with the team and build upon existing structures.
Finidi’s previous tenure as assistant coach under Peseiro, coupled with his domestic and continental coaching experience, positioned him as the ideal candidate.
Monetary considerations also factored into the decision, with the financial constraints of hiring a foreign coach in today’s economic climate playing a significant role.
Meanwhile, some applicants, including Emmanuel Amuneke and Michael Nsien, expressed acceptance of the decision while acknowledging the lack of formal interviews in the selection process.
Despite reservations about the transparency of the process, candidates like Nsien expressed hope that Finidi would assemble a competent backroom staff to support his coaching endeavors.
In response to Finidi’s appointment, Sylvanus Okpala conveyed his congratulations, emphasizing the importance of unity and support for the new coach’s success.
While recognizing the competitiveness of the selection process, Okpala expressed optimism in Finidi’s ability to lead the Super Eagles to greater heights.
As Finidi assumes his new role, the focus now shifts to rallying behind him and providing the necessary support for the team’s aspirations under his leadership.
