Veteran record producer Olumide Ogunade, better known as ID Cabasa, recently shared an emotional story about the departure of popular Nigerian rapper Olamide from his record label, Coded Tunes.
In an interview on the ‘Afrobeats Podcast,’ monitored by Saving Point Media, Cabasa recounted the deep bond he had with Olamide and the emotional experience of parting ways with him.
According to him, he first met Olamide when the rapper was just 13 years old.
Olamide had come to Cabasa’s studio with a friend who wanted to feature him on a song.
Although Olamide’s friend lacked musical talent, Olamide himself impressed Cabasa with his skills.

After giving Olamide a beat, the young rapper delivered 16 bars that changed everything, and from that moment, Olamide became like a son to Cabasa.
Reflecting on the time when Olamide decided to leave Coded Tunes, Cabasa said, “When he was about to leave my record label, we sat down to discuss it. It was painful to me. It wasn’t the pain of not wanting him to progress; it was the pain of seeing someone you love leave. I cried.”
Cabasa continued, “I said, ‘Olamide, you should’ve waited o!’ He said, ‘Bros, I want to do something, and I’m sure, by your code, we might not be able to do some of them.’ We didn’t have a fight. I gave him my full blessings.”
Olamide left Coded Tunes in 2012 and went on to establish his own record label, YBNL Nation, which has since become one of the most successful labels in Nigeria.
