Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has apologized for a previous statement suggesting that Christians who do not pay tithe might not make it to heaven.

In a recent address to his congregation, a video of which has been circulating online, Adeboye referred to his earlier statement as a “mistake.”

Speaking at the RCCG’s ongoing Youth Convention at Redemption Camp, he clarified that paying tithe is not a prerequisite for entering heaven.

“I apologise for saying, ‘If you don’t pay tithe, you might not make it to heaven.’ I’m sorry, that’s wrong, and it’s not in the Bible,” Adeboye admitted.

He further pointed out that the scripture emphasizes peaceful and holy living as the true prerequisites for making it to heaven. “What the Bible says is, ‘Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see God,’” he said.

Adeboye, drawing from his background in science, explained, “It is possible to be right and wrong at the same time. For years, we believed that light travels in a straight line, only to later discover that it moves in waves.”

He also remarked on the traditional 10 per cent tithe, calling it suitable for beginners, while suggesting that more significant contributions could be more appropriate for others.

“It is wrong to limit you to 10 per cent when someone is talking of 20, 30, 40 per cent,” he stated, adding that he hopes to provide further clarity on the subject soon.
