Safina Namukwaya, a 70-year-old woman in Uganda, has given birth to twins after undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment at a hospital in the country.

The twins, a boy and a girl, were delivered via caesarean section at a medical facility in Kampala, bringing joy to Namukwaya and medical professionals involved in her care.

Dr. Edward Tamale Sali, who supervised the pregnancy and delivery at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre, called it an “extraordinary achievement” to deliver twins to Africa’s oldest mother at the age of 70.

Both Namukwaya and the newborns are reported to be in good health.

Expressing her happiness, Namukwaya, who resides in the rural area of Masaka, about 120 kilometers west of Kampala, said, “There is no way to express my joy at this moment.”

She previously gave birth to a girl in 2020, overcoming societal skepticism and mocking as a “cursed woman” who had faced challenges conceiving earlier.

Namukwaya’s journey to motherhood involved the loss of her first husband in 1992, leaving her without children. She met her current partner in 1996.

However, she expressed disappointment that her partner has not visited her since she came to the hospital for the delivery, suggesting that the news of expecting twins might be a concern for some men due to potential increased responsibilities.

Despite societal expectations and challenges, Namukwaya remains overjoyed at the “miracle” of having twins at the age of 70.

The successful delivery marks a significant milestone and has captured attention as a unique and rare occurrence in Uganda.
