The political turmoil in Rivers State is escalating as the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has instructed its 27 members in the House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
In response, the state government has strongly criticized the APC’s call for the immediate commencement of impeachment proceedings against the governor.
Meanwhile, despite the ongoing political crisis, Governor Fubara is preparing to unveil a series of significant projects in the state to commemorate his first year in office.
The APC argues that the impeachment process is necessary due to the governor’s refusal to honor a peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu between Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, several months ago.
This refusal was further exacerbated by the governor’s recent declaration that the seats of the lawmakers affiliated with APC were vacant.

Governor Fubara’s assertion that the APC lawmakers are nonexistent from a legal perspective has drawn sharp criticism from the caretaker committee chairman of the Rivers State APC, Chief Tony Okocha.
Okocha condemned the governor’s statement, labeling it as an attempt to rewrite the Nigerian constitution and portraying tendencies of dictatorship.
In response, the State’s Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Joseph Johnson, argued that the 27 lawmakers lacked the moral standing to impeach the governor, emphasizing that their actions lacked legitimacy.
Despite the political tensions, preparations are underway for Governor Fubara’s anniversary celebrations, during which a series of projects will be commissioned.
The Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, unveiled a 20-day program of activities, including the commissioning of various infrastructure projects across the state.
