The commander of the Ogun State Federal Road Safety Corps, Anthony Uga, has criticized journalists who sensationalize tragic events, labeling them as enemies of the country who should not be spared.

In an interview with Yemi Eniola, the publisher of Saving Point Media, Uga expressed concern over journalists who exaggerate or overhype tragic incidents, stating that such actions do not demonstrate love for Nigeria and can incite unrest.

According to Uga, modern journalism needs to be preserved, and individuals who operate online blogs under the guise of journalism should be distinguished from professionals who adhere to ethical standards.

He emphasized the importance of separating genuine journalists from bloggers who prioritize sensationalism over accuracy, thereby posing a threat to the country’s stability.

Uga highlighted a recent example of misinformation surrounding a gas explosion in Abeokuta, where bloggers reported multiple fatalities before accurate information was provided by the Ogun State Federal Road Safety Corps.

He noted that such false reporting can have serious consequences, citing the case of a motor boy who lost his life in the incident and not two or three as claimed by some bloggers.

Uga explained that the motor boy’s death could have been prevented if he had not been trapped in the trailer involved in the accident.

Another incident Uga referenced was a fire outbreak at a filling station in the Obantoko area of Ogun State.

Despite no loss of life, a blogger falsely claimed that multiple casualties occurred, attributing the information to the FRSC spokesperson.

Uga expressed frustration at this misleading report and conducted research to identify the source, which was traced to a location outside Ogun State in the Ondo area.

Uga underscored the role of accurate journalism in promoting peace and progress in Nigeria.

He urged authorities responsible for regulating journalism, especially in Ogun State, to identify and address unprofessional conduct among practitioners.

Uga emphasized the importance of factual reporting that contributes to the country’s growth and development, urging journalists to prioritize accuracy and responsibility in their work.
