The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arch. Ahmed Dangiwa, has announced plans to launch a Diaspora Mortgage Housing Scheme for Nigerians in the United Kingdom, United States of America, and Canada in February 2024.
The minister shared this information during a meeting with the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and other management staff in Abuja.
According to a statement from NiDCOM’s Protocol Unit, Arch. Dangiwa emphasized that the objective of the scheme is to provide decent housing for Nigerians living abroad when they return to Nigeria.

He further mentioned the commitment of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) to fulfill its tripartite mandate, including the Diaspora City Project in partnership with NIDCOM, FHA, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The Diaspora City Project is situated at Maitama 2, covering over 675 hectares of land, as noted in the statement.
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa commended the Minister for his dedication and participation in launching the Diaspora Mortgage Scheme during the Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit.
She expressed the enthusiasm of Nigerians in the Diaspora regarding both the Diaspora mortgage scheme and the upcoming Diaspora smart city in Kabusa, Maitama, FCT.
The statement highlighted that there are approximately 20 million Nigerians in the Diaspora who contribute significantly to the Nigerian economy by remitting an average of over $24 billion annually.
