The Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has declared its commitment to taking decisive action against the proliferation of illegal abattoirs in the FCT.

Mr. Lawan Geidam, the Mandate Secretary, made this commitment during a visit by officials of the FCT Butchers Association to his office in Abuja.

Geidam emphasized that the initiative aims to enforce minimum standards in meat handling and ensure the well-being of consumers in the federal capital, Abuja.

He underscored the importance of adherence to operational standards and public health for those involved in the meat processing sector.

According to Geidam, the Veterinary Services Department is actively monitoring and working to enforce compliance with operational standards.

He expressed concern about the significant threat to public safety posed by the proliferation of unauthorized abattoirs in the FCT.

Geidam assured the butchers of the secretariat’s commitment to addressing various challenges affecting the sub-sector.

Efforts are underway to improve water supply, ensure efficient waste management in the abattoirs, and establish biogas stations as an alternative to the hazardous practice of using tires in processing animal skins.

The Mandate Secretary disclosed plans to intensify daily meat inspection activities at various abattoirs, ensuring that no animal is slaughtered without being certified safe by veterinary doctors.

He appealed for the cooperation of the butchers in facilitating the work of veterinary doctors during inspection, vaccination, and other services.

Alhaji Bashir Musa, the chairman of the FCT Butchers Association, expressed the association’s commitment to complying with administration guidelines on the establishment and operation of abattoirs.

Musa thanked the FCTA for its efforts to improve the conditions of abattoirs and urged the administration to address the aging infrastructure of these facilities.

He also applauded the plan to modernize the abattoirs in line with best practices, foreseeing significant improvements in efficiency and service quality.
