The Enugu State Police Command has officially reported the apprehension of a young man accused of murdering his mother, Mrs. Charity Orji, and his sister, Miss Ukamaka Orji, and concealing their bodies in a shallow grave within their residence in the state.
The alleged perpetrator, identified as Somadina Orji from Igboariam in Anambra State, is said to have committed the heinous act on Monday, December 4, 2023, at Umuagu Inyi, situated in the Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Multiple accounts and recorded videos of the incident indicate that the late Charity, originally from Inyi but married in Igboariam, Anambra State, had been residing in her family home with her children for several years.
Regrettably, her son, reportedly involved in drug-related activities and engaged in longstanding conflicts with her, is accused of causing her death.

A community leader in Inyi, Mr. Ben Obi, revealed to the media that issues between the suspect and his younger brother had surfaced weeks prior.
Reportedly, the suspect had attempted to harm his sibling, but the mother intervened and reported the matter to the community leaders, urging them to intervene and remove him from the house due to fears for the younger brother’s safety.
Tragically, the younger sister had been missing for two weeks before the confrontation between the suspect and his mother.
According to Mr. Ben Obi, upon the mother’s return from a condolence visit at Akpugoeze, Somadina allegedly killed and buried her in a shallow grave in their backyard.
Concerns arose when the younger brother, searching for his mother, sensed something amiss and raised an alarm.
Upon interrogation by villagers, Somadina confessed to killing his mother and also admitted to the murder of his younger sister several weeks earlier.
Authorities were notified, leading to the exhumation of the victims’ remains and their transfer to the mortuary, while the suspect was promptly taken into custody.
Ben highlighted that Charity, before her tragic demise, sustained her family by selling fufu.
He appealed to the government for intervention to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Expressing condemnation for the act, Mr. Ejike Tasie, the coordinating president general in Oji River, called attention to the alarming use of hard drugs in the Inyi Community.
He urged the anti-drug agency in Oji River to collaborate in addressing drug abuse within their various communities.
The Enugu State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the incident, stating that the suspect had been apprehended, and investigations were ongoing.
Ndukwe assured that the suspect would face prosecution once the investigations were concluded.
