The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to arraign the former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Godwin Emefiele, alongside Henry Isioma Omole, at the Ikeja State High Court in Lagos on Monday, April 8, 2024.

They are facing allegations of abuse of office related to the allocation of billions of United States dollars.

Emefiele is accused of committing acts of abuse of office between 2022 and 2023 by directing the allocation of foreign exchange totaling $2,136,391,737.33 without following due process.

Similar allegations involve the arbitrary allocation of foreign exchange amounting to $291,945,785.59 and $1,769,254,793.16 in other instances.

Additionally, Emefiele’s co-defendant, Omole, is alleged to have accepted $110,000 as a reward for Emefiele’s allocation of foreign exchange in favor of a specific entity.

The charges brought against them contravene Section 73 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

In a related development, President Bola Tinubu has expressed gratitude to Mr. Jim Obazee, the Central Bank Investigator, for concluding the investigation into the Central Bank of Nigeria and related entities.

The investigation, which commenced on July 30, 2023, was officially closed on March 31, 2024, with all follow-up actions now being handled by law enforcement and regulatory agencies.

President Tinubu commended Mr. Obazee for his dedication and professionalism in conducting the investigation and wished him success in his future endeavors.
