The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has accused Governor Godwin Obaseki of betrayal, alleging that Obaseki is supporting another aspirant in the upcoming September 21 governorship election.
The accusation comes as Shaibu seeks to become the next governor of Edo State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Shaibu expressed regret for supporting Obaseki’s second-term bid in 2020 when Obaseki had a political dispute with his predecessor and then political godfather, Adams Oshiomhole.

During an interview on Arise TV, Shaibu stated that he feels betrayed by the governor, emphasizing the financial and political contributions he made to support Obaseki’s candidacy.
In response to the perceived betrayal, Shaibu mentioned a biblical verse, stating, “The heart of man is desperately wicked,” and described Obaseki’s actions as hurtful and disappointing.
Meanwhile, another PDP governorship aspirant, John Yakubu, withdrew from the race on Wednesday, endorsing a former Chairman of Sterling Bank Plc, Asue Ighodalo, believed to be Obaseki’s candidate for the governorship poll.
Yakubu stated that he made the decision for the overall interest of the party and the desire of Edo people to continue having the PDP in power.
The PDP leaders from Edo North also recently endorsed Ighodalo as their preferred PDP governorship candidate, further intensifying the internal dynamics within the party.
The Edo Central PDP Special Committee, led by former Foreign Affairs Minister Chief Tom Ikimi, is expected to announce its consensus aspirant on Thursday.
