The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has disclosed plans for two groundbreaking bills aimed at addressing unemployment challenges and recognizing multiple national languages in Nigeria.

During a meeting with Buildup Integrated Services in Abuja on Saturday, Mr. Kalu hinted at the National Apprenticeship Scheme bill and another bill advocating for the recognition of Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo as national languages.

The proposed National Apprenticeship Scheme is a technology-driven dual apprenticeship model designed by Buildup Integrated Services.

It seeks to combine theoretical education with hands-on practical training, offering a legal framework to create more skills and employment opportunities for Nigeria’s large population of unskilled youths.

In a statement by Kalu’s Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, the Deputy Speaker expressed concern over the nation’s significant number of unskilled youths and emphasized the need for a legislative intervention to institutionalize the apprenticeship system.

He highlighted the importance of bridging the skills gap by providing practical expertise along with theoretical education.

Kalu stated, “An institutionalized dual apprenticeship system will act as a conduit, offering a real-world application of the skills acquired through theoretical education.”

Referring to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, Kalu noted that the National Apprenticeship Scheme aligns with the nation’s aspirations for economic growth, job creation, and youth empowerment.

He emphasized that, beyond certificate acquisition, practical skills are essential for a productive life, citing examples from countries like Germany and China.

The Deputy Speaker welcomed constructive dialogue and recommendations, pledging to collaborate on legislation that supports entrepreneurship development, encourages commerce, and facilitates economic growth.

In addition to the National Apprenticeship Scheme, Kalu discussed the Multi-Language Bill, recognizing the value of allowing Nigerians to communicate in their native dialects, especially when learning a skill.

He commended Buildup Integrated Services for their commitment to skills development and entrepreneurship.

Buildup Integrated Services CEO, Chibuike Aguene, called on the Deputy Speaker to support a legislative intervention for the institutionalization of a dual apprenticeship system in the country.

Kalu, in response, pledged his support to the initiative and promised assistance for 3000 youth across the federation in the first phase of the apprenticeship system championed by Buildup Integrated Services.

The proposed bills are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s approach to skills development, employment, and linguistic diversity.
