The Public Relations Officer for the Delta State Police command, Bright Edafe, has urged Nigerians to control their anger to prevent tragic incidents like murder.

He emphasized that claims of self-defence in murder cases can only be determined by the court of law.

Edafe made these remarks in a post on his social media handle on Friday, mentioning that the police command paraded two murder suspects who claimed self-defence.

He recounted one incident in Ozoro where a boyfriend and girlfriend got into a fight, resulting in the boyfriend stabbing the girlfriend after she cut him with a knife.

Despite the claim of self-defence, the boyfriend faces a murder charge. In another case in Asaba, a man allegedly stabbed a woman to death during an argument, and he too faces a murder charge despite claiming self-defence.

Edafe stressed the importance of temper management to avoid such situations and reiterated that the determination of self-defence lies with the court. He warned the public to be cautious and manage their temper wisely.

The statement from Edafe follows recent incidents, including the case of a Chinese national accused of culpable homicide after allegedly stabbing his girlfriend in self-defence.

Amidst growing insecurity, there have been calls for the right to self-defence from various stakeholders.

Lawmaker Ned Nwoko proposed a bill allowing civilians to own and carry firearms for self-defence, echoing sentiments shared by other politicians like Alhassan Ado-Doguwa and Samuel Ortom in previous years.
