Chess grandmaster Tunde Onakoya embarked on a quest to surpass the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon, aiming for 58 hours.

After 16 hours of play, during which he faced and defeated all opponents, including New York’s National Chess Master Shawn Martinez, Onakoya’s endeavor took place in New York City’s Times Square, commencing on April 17 and set to conclude on April 19.

According to his manager, Taiwo, operating under the handle “OgaBoxx,” Onakoya adhered to the challenge’s regulations, taking a 30-minute accumulated break after 15 hours of continuous play. The rules dictate a five-minute break for every hour of gameplay.

Onakoya concurrently plays two sets of games, ensuring victory in both is essential. While his match against Shawn Martinez is pivotal for the Guinness World Record attempt, the simultaneous games against random opponents in the second set do not contribute to the record.

Support for Onakoya’s feat extends beyond the chess community, with Nigerians abroad rallying behind him, and notable figures such as Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu offering encouragement.

Additionally, the US Mission Nigeria and UK in Nigeria expressed their support for Onakoya via their respective channels.
