Premier League powerhouse Chelsea has earmarked Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez as a potential backup plan in case their pursuit of long-standing target Victor Osimhen falls through during the current transfer window.
Osimhen has remained a target for Chelsea since last summer, but Napoli successfully retained the Nigerian international despite strong interest.
In December 2023, Napoli dealt a significant blow to Chelsea’s hopes by announcing Osimhen’s contract extension until 2026, featuring a new release clause exceeding £100 million.

Nevertheless, Chelsea persisted in their efforts to secure the services of the Super Eagles striker, amid speculation suggesting Osimhen might seek a move away from Naples by the summer of 2024.
Osimhen’s prowess has attracted attention from various European clubs, including Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, and Liverpool. Recently, both Chelsea and Arsenal reportedly tested the waters with a €90 million bid for the Napoli striker.
Chelsea’s significant financial investments in recent years, exceeding £1 billion, have left them reliant on substantial sales to fund further big-name signings.
Therefore, if Chelsea fails to secure Osimhen’s signature, they reportedly view Lautaro Martinez as a viable alternative.
Martinez, who currently has two years left on his contract with Inter Milan, presents a more financially feasible option compared to Osimhen. Last season, Osimhen showcased his scoring prowess by netting 26 Serie A goals in 32 appearances, aiding Napoli in clinching their first league title in 33 years. However, his performance dipped this season, managing 11 goals and three assists in 17 league outings.
