The swearing-in ceremony of Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the Governor of Ondo State is currently ongoing in Akure, the state capital.
The ongoing swearing-in ceremony of Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the Governor is a result of the unfortunate demise of the former governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, on Wednesday.
Akeredolu, aged 67, passed away in Germany after a battle with prostate cancer, as disclosed by the state government in an official statement.
The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs. Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, conveyed the somber news, stating, “With a heavy heart, the Ondo State Government announces the passing of our beloved Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON.”

Governor Akeredolu peacefully departed in the early hours of Wednesday, December 27, 2023.
His demise, a great loss, leaves a profound void in the hearts of the people of Ondo State.
The statement revealed that Akeredolu answered the eternal call while receiving medical treatment in Germany, succumbing to complications arising from protracted prostate cancer.
The former governor had undergone two separate medical vacations, the first on April 3, 2023, and the second on July 10, 2023. On September 7, he returned to the country and promptly informed the state House of Assembly.
As reported earlier by PUNCH Online, the state Chief Judge, Justice Olusegun Odusola, was expected to preside over the swearing-in ceremony.
Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who had served as the deputy governor, officially assumed the role on December 13, following the formal transfer of power when Akeredolu went on another medical vacation.
