On Friday, Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, declared a suspension of mining activities within the state.
This decision was made during the launch of the initial 60 Mining Marshalls, tasked with combating illegal mining of solid minerals across the region.
Represented by his deputy, Sam Ode, the governor emphasized the necessity of this suspension until comprehensive data on miners could be compiled.

The Mineral Resources and Environment Management Committee would oversee the collation of data from all miners in the state.
Alia stated, “Until the verification exercise is concluded, all mining activities will be halted pending the verification outcome.”
He urged security agencies, including the joint Taskforce on illegal mining and MIREMCO, to ensure compliance for the welfare of the people and to boost Internally Generated Revenue.
Warning against any form of illegality, the governor asserted his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
He directed the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to intensify efforts in combating crimes related to the state’s abundant mineral resources.
Alia underscored the importance of collective efforts towards achieving a better Benue State, highlighting the challenges of development amid dwindling resources.
He stressed the need for visionary leadership to harness untapped resources for the state’s transformation while maintaining existing structures.
The governor reaffirmed his dedication to the state’s transformation, emphasizing the utilization of its natural resources for the betterment of its people.
