Emmanuel Agena, the acting chairman of the Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS), announced that 35 individuals involved in illegal tax collection in the state are currently facing prosecution.

Aiming to generate over N16 billion in revenue for 2024, the agency surpassed its N14 billion target in 2023.

Speaking to journalists in Makurdi, the state capital, Agena expressed concern over the activities of illegal tax collectors, many of whom have the support of influential individuals.

Under his leadership, he emphasized that the practice of patronizing politicians is now a thing of the past.

Agena also addressed a recent incident where a truck transporting palliatives from Adamawa to Anambra State was hijacked by youths in Aliade, Gwer East.

The perpetrators, who beat the driver and stole over N200,000, have been arrested and are undergoing investigation.

He stated, “Our aim is to eliminate or significantly reduce illegal tax collectors. So far, 35 people involved in this illegal activity have been arrested and are facing prosecution.”

To enhance revenue collection, the BIRS has engaged an ICT company to aid in the process.

The company, with over 250 trained staff equipped with Point of Sales systems, works on a commission basis to facilitate revenue collection.

Agena highlighted the importance of building trust with taxpayers, noting that people are more willing to pay taxes when they see the tangible benefits of government projects and initiatives.

The BIRS is also focusing on recovering over N5.6 billion from ground rent in collaboration with the Ministry of Land.
