The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has extended congratulations to governors whose elections were upheld by the Supreme Court on Friday.

The apex court affirmed the elections of opposition party governors, including Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Caleb Muftwang (Plateau), and Abba Yusuff (Kano).

In a statement released by his media office, Atiku Abubakar expressed readiness to lead a coalition of opposition political parties against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He emphasized the need for a united opposition force to counter what he perceives as the APC’s move towards a one-party dictatorship in Nigeria.

Atiku, who recently proposed a merger of all opposition political parties during a meeting with the National Executive Committee of the Inter-Party Advisory Council of Nigeria, stated, “If we don’t come together to challenge what the ruling party is trying to create, our democracy will suffer for it, and the consequences of it will affect the generations yet unborn.”

The former vice president hailed the Supreme Court’s judgment as a win for democracy and good news for the people of Bauchi, Plateau, Akwa Ibom, and Zamfara states.

He congratulated Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, affiliated with the New Nigeria Peoples Party, and emphasized the importance of a united opposition force in strengthening democracy in Nigeria.

Atiku urged the respective PDP governors of Bauchi, Zamfara, Plateau, and Kano to view their victories at the Supreme Court as an opportunity to consolidate and expand the scope of good governance.

With the electioneering phase concluded, he expressed confidence that the PDP can now focus on its role as the major opposition party in the country.
