In a shocking incident on Wednesday, an accountant employed with the Cross River State Ministry of Education became the target of a violent attack when gunmen trailed him to the old Government Secretariat located near Government House in Calabar.

The accountant, who sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh, was ambushed after leaving a bank where he had completed some financial transactions.

The assailants, armed with firearms, followed him to the secretariat, where they forcefully seized the bag containing money after shooting him at close range.

SP Irene Ugbo, the spokesperson for the Cross River State Police Command, confirmed the distressing event.

She revealed that the victim was swiftly transported to the Naval Referral Hospital to receive urgent medical attention.

Expressing condemnation for the brazen act, SP Irene Ugbo assured the public that the police were actively pursuing the gunmen, who reportedly fled the scene on motorcycles.

The authorities are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Calabar has recently witnessed an upsurge in robbery attacks executed by criminals on motorcycles, raising concerns about the safety and security of residents in the city.
