The reconstruction of the Sango Ota-Abeokuta Expressway, which was initially contracted at N70 billion by the Federal Government in 2021, is now expected to cost more than N150 billion, according to Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State.
The governor disclosed this during a courtesy visit by the management team of Lafarge Africa Plc to the Governor’s Office in Abeokuta.
Abiodun attributed the significant increase in the project’s cost to the high prices of asphalt, diesel, and cement, driven by inflation.

He sought financial support from Lafarge and other major companies operating along the expressway for the reconstruction project, which is currently in a deplorable condition.
The governor urged the state government, Lafarge, and other major companies in the area to collaborate in identifying the portions of the project cost they could contribute towards.
Abiodun pointed out that Lafarge and other industries along the expressway, especially with their trucks transporting materials and cement, have contributed significantly to the road’s deteriorating condition.
Additionally, Governor Abiodun urged Lafarge to adopt global best practices in disposing of industrial wastes in the host communities.
In response, the Chief Executive Officer of Lafarge, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, highlighted the company’s 64-year contribution to the economic growth of the Ewekoro axis in Ogun State.
