The Adamawa State Police Command has revealed that Abdullahi Mohammed, the 30-year-old man who climbed a 33kv high-tension electricity pole in Mayo-Belwa last Friday, has been admitted to the Yola Psychiatric Hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Speaking exclusively to Arewa PUNCH, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, stated that Mohammed is undergoing psychiatric tests at a facility within the specialist hospital in Yola.

Nguroje explained, “When the police from the Mayo-Belwa division rescued Abdullahi Mohammed from the high-tension pole, they found hard drugs, including green leaves he identified as Indian hemp, in his possession.”

Mohammed admitted to the police that he regularly consumed Indian hemp and other hard drugs, which contributed to his abnormal behavior.

This prompted authorities to transfer him to the psychiatric hospital for further examination. “We are still waiting for the medical results before deciding on the next course of action,” Nguroje added.

Last Saturday night, the police rescued Mohammed, who had climbed the high-tension electricity pole, demanding that President Bola Tinubu resign before he would come down.

His actions were described as suicidal by the police, who persuaded him to descend with the help of local residents.

Nguroje reminded the public that attempting suicide is a criminal offense under Nigerian law, and Mohammed will face charges in court for his actions.

The incident, which occurred on a market day in Mayo-Belwa along the Yola-Jalingo highway, caused a stir in the local community.

Mohammed, a native of Gashaka town in Taraba State, had refused to come down from the pole until he was finally convinced by local authorities late on Saturday night.
