A video circulating on social media depicts a woman lamenting the issuance of a demolition notice for her property in Lagos State, allegedly just two months after moving in.
The woman, yet to be identified, appeared visibly distressed as she recounted the situation. A picture of the demolition notice, dated May 7, 2024, was included in the video.
Expressing her anguish, she stated, “We bought that property in February, and we’ve only been there for two months. All the hard work, all the sleepless nights, everything… If you’re in Lagos, you’ll know how much property in Eti Osa costs.”
She also shared the emotional impact on her family, particularly her son, and expressed the difficulty in explaining the situation to them.

The video, initially shared on X.com by Spotlight Abby under the handle #Spotlight_Abby, has sparked reactions from social media users.
Some sympathized with the family’s plight, while others criticized their decision to invest in Lagos real estate, given recent demolition incidents, emphasizing the importance of thorough due diligence before such investments.
Responding to the video, one user, Nneka Busy Body, questioned the rationale behind investing in Lagos real estate in 2024, considering the uncertainties associated with such investments.
Another user, identified as #ideniyor, attributed the situation to the lack of legal oversight and due diligence in the property purchase.
This incident adds to previous controversies surrounding property demolitions in Lagos. Last week, residents of Mende Estate Villa in Maryland lamented the demolition of their houses by the state government, seeking compensation for alternative shelter.
The state’s Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed that the government had issued two demolition notices to the residents in 2021 and 2023.
Additionally, Wahab hinted on X.com that illegal builders whose houses are demolished might soon be required to cover the costs of the demolition.
