The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has emphasized the importance of addressing aviation safety concerns during his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
He discussed the recent suspension of Dana Airlines’ Air Operator Certificate by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) following safety issues.
During the interview on Thursday, Keyamo clarified that he instructed the NCAA to suspend Dana Airlines’ certificate and highlighted the necessity of thorough aircraft checks to prevent potential safety hazards.
He expressed concerns about the risks posed by improperly maintained aircraft, referring to them as “flying coffins.”

Addressing criticisms of the suspension, Keyamo noted the prevalence of self-proclaimed aviation experts, even among individuals like puff-puff sellers at airports.
He challenged critics to engage in public debates and provide constructive ideas for improving the aviation sector.
Keyamo has previously faced scrutiny over his visits to Airbus factories in France, with some stakeholders accusing him of promoting Airbus.
In response, Keyamo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to facilitating aircraft leasing for local operators and criticized experts who have not contributed to industry development.
Regarding efforts to address irregularities in the aviation sector, Keyamo acknowledged deep-rooted complicity within the system and vowed to cleanse it.
He highlighted instances of corruption, including regulators living beyond their means and compromising safety regulations.
Keyamo pledged to combat corruption within the sector to ensure the safety of air travel in Nigeria.
